Prairie Autumn

14 Sep

Diane’s post about wild geese on Random Noodling last Poetry Friday reminded me of this poem. Are the geese doing their autumn flypast where you live?

Thanks, Diane. Since I saw your poem about wild geese last week, I keep bumping into more! I guess it’s a seasonal topic.

Very nice, Violet! I especially like “wheat perfume” 🙂
There are 60 geese that live near us, and some of them stay all year.

Wow, Tabatha, they’re your near neighbours. Actually some geese stick around here too. Others leave. I wonder what makes the difference.

Maybe geese are like people–the retired ones can afford to be snowbirds, the younger ones have to stick around and hold down a job! 🙂

Wow I love this – the language you chose and the shape of the words. Lovely! I am getting in the mood now…

Thanks Jama. What is even more cool is the CD book project you’re highlighting on your blog this week. Wonderful!

Gorgeous Violet, words and picture. No, the geese are not flying through. Many stay here too.

Our geese actually do both. We see some around through the winter, yet in autumn they go honking by in the hundreds. Maybe we’re on a flight path.

I saw my first v of geese just this afternoon so the timing of your wonderful poem was impeccable.

Great, Katya. They must be the early birds, the ones that Rachel Field talks about in this poem.

Just came acros this now – love it! It’s a calm read, even though there’s motion to it…and I love the last line, a perfect ending. Haven’t seen any yet, so I’m hoping summer holds ona little longer!

Indeed! Summer can’t overstay her welcome where I live either.

So beautiful. The poem breathes movement and autumn. I love any image of wild geese. Thanks for a visual treat!

Lovely — both the words and the picture, and the way the words complete the picture.

Geese often fly over the playground — low — during recess. Sometimes their voices are silent, but you can still hear the whoosh of their wings, and sometimes they are honking all the way. I wouldn’t trade recess duty for cafeteria duty for anything! How could I go for a whole day without that 15 minutes outside? I’d miss the geese! And the grasshopper gatherers I wrote about over at Laura Shovan’s!
